NE PEOPLES ASSEMBLY AGAINST AUSTERITY (PAAA) ORGANISING MEETING

1. WALLSEND MEMORIAL HALL OCCUPATION

  • The 17 employees of Wallsend Memorial Hall have started a lock-in to save their jobs and the MEM from the axe – a public meeting was held on Tuesday 17 September
  • ***All present agreed that the NE People’s Assembly should actively support this action, invite a speaker from the occupation to address our public meeting on the 25 September and promote any future actions / events called by the occupiers of the Wallsend Memorial Hall***

2. FEEDBACK FROM THE NE PAAA LAST SATURDAY AT NORTHERN STAGE

  • All present commented on the good things about the event and on how it could have gone better and agreed that we should actively seek further feedback from attendees in order to help us better organise such events in the future

  • ***Alexander Marshall volunteered to help Matthew Giles run the website and deal with all the feedback***

3. LOCAL PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY GROUPS

  • 142 people signed up for their local People’s Assembly group email lists
  • Local People’s Assemblies have been set-up in Durham, Teeside and Sunderland and Matthew Giles has forwarded the relevant people’s contact details to each of the local organisers.
  • ***Joan Hewitt and Simon Hall volunteered to set-up a North-Tyneside People’s Assembly group***
  • ***Dawn Furness interested in setting-up a Northumberland People’s Assembly group***

4. NE PAAA COORDINATING GROUP

  • The NE People’s Assembly coordinating group is an elected body which exists to organise the detail of regional events and mobilisations and generally coordinate the work of all those involved or supportive of the PAAA in the North-east.
  • PAAA activists are elected onto the NE PAAA coordinating group at NE PAAA public meetings – candidates must have a positive history of activity within the People’s Assembly Against Austerity to be considered for election
  • ***all present agreed to put forward the following names for election at the NE PAAA public meeting on 25 September on the provision that they confirm to Tony Dowling that they would like to be elected to the NE PAAA coordinating group:

5. ”Where next in the fight a

against austerity?’ NE PAAA PUBLIC MEETING TUES 24 SEPT

  • 6pm at St John’s Church Hall, Newcastle City Centre. NE1 5JG
  • ***All present agreed to invite a speaker from Wallsend People’s Centre Occupation to introduce meeting***
  • ***Collection to be taken for Hovis workers strike***
  • ***Tony Dowling to chair***
  • Main-part of meeting to focus on reviewing 14 September’s NE PAAA, to look forward to the Save Our NHS demo on the 29 September and to gather ideas for action on the 5 November national day of direct-action against austerity
  • *** review of 14 September to be introduced by Thabo, Fran Pierre, Tony Pierre and Jerry Drake who will share their personal experiences on particular workshops and others aspects of the event***
  • ***Matthew Giles to invite everyone to sign-up to their local PAAA groups***
  • New NE PAAA coordinating group line-up to be put to the meeting for election

6. 29 SEPT SAVE OUR NHS DEMO

  • Mark Tyers reported that there are few seats left on the Newcastle Unison coach to the demonstration
  • ***Mark Tyers to chase up potential attendees***

7. MARK STEEL NEWCASTLE FUNDRAISER

  • Northern Stage interested in hosting
  • ***Tony Dowling to contact Mark Steel and sort out a date***

8. FUTURE NE PAAA MEETINGS

  • Tues 24 Sept: ‘Where next in the fight against austerity?: NE PAAA public meeting, 6pm, St John’s Church Hall, Grainger St, Newcastle.
  • Tues 8 October: NE PAAA coordinating group meeting ***Tony Pierre to try and book Unison Regional Offices for no earlier than a 5.30pm start***

9. HOVIS STRIKE

  • ***All present agreed we should support this strike against zero-hour contracts***
  • ***Simon Hall to send a statement of support on behalf of NE PAAA***
  • ***Collection to be taken at 24 September meeting for Hovis strikers***

Room collection: £23.75 was raised- £10 was spent on room hire, the other £13.75 was deposited in the COR Tyne and Wear bank account on behalf of NE PAAA
