17th October strike: Onwards and upwards!

Firstly, a massive thank you to all of those who have read, shared and given me feedback on my open letter to parents about today’s strike action.

Well, what a day. There was a certain symbolic resonance to marching through the centre of historic Durham, a renowned centre of learning, to defend educational standards against the worst onslaught on the teaching profession in living memory.

There will always be those that criticise teachers and teachers – because they care deeply about what they do – will always be self-critical professionals. That’s the nature of the job and it’s why teachers did not take strike action lightly. Indeed, the unions have avoided calling teachers out on strike for a very long time indeed.

It was hugely invigorating to be part of this enormous statement that ‘enough is enough’ today. Yes, today felt like a turning point. There was a tangible sense…
